The whole work is about a single gesture: something red holds something pale and will not let it be moved. A chalice-shaped form with torn edges, in a strong red, cradles a smooth, pale grey dome.
I built the background from hundreds of small pebbles in browns, ochres and white — irregular, laid one after another. That small, monotonous labour was needed so the red at the centre would strike at full force.
This is the only painting in the series where red is the main colour. What emerges is something between a plant and a figure — and that is how it was meant to stay.
