The only true landscape in my archive. A white cold sun stands low over a frozen lake, the sky is pink-grey, and the shoreline is barely drawn in the mist.
In the foreground stand leafless trees and dark speckled cattails — the only things drawn sharply. Everything else is blurred, because at dawn over water nothing has hard edges.
The speckling on the cattails is the same motif that becomes a net of cells in my other paintings. Here it appeared for the first time in a place where it really exists.
The vertical format and high horizon give a sense of space. A cool work, but not a sad one — this is light that is only just rising.
Oil on canvas, 130 × 100 cm. This work has been sold; it stays in the archive to show where the paintings available today came from. Similar motifs are in the oil painting gallery.
