COBALTUS
oil on canvas, 100 × 120 cm

Oil painting: turquoise netted forms on dark curving stems, the upper half of the ground cobalt, the lower white with reflections

The canvas divides in two: the top a dense saturated cobalt, the bottom a white, blurred plane with reflections. On that boundary stand turquoise forms on dark curving stems, each covered with a net of cells.

Behind them loom pale, barely indicated twins — the same shapes blurred into the background, as if two breaths further away.

Dividing the canvas in half is risky and was done deliberately. One usually avoids splitting a picture evenly, because it falls into two parts; here it is held together by the rhythm of the stems crossing the boundary.

Cobalt in this quantity is demanding — it needs a wall that does not shout it down.
