One form, one event, a grey ground and nothing else. A green-turquoise seed pod hangs from a thin stalk, covered with a fine, regular net. At the bottom it splits, and a navy, tightly furled shape pushes out of the opening.
I wanted to hold the moment before, not after. Nothing has fallen out yet, nothing has scattered — there is only the split and what is forcing its way through it.
The soft shadow beneath the form and the smooth, almost photographic ground make this a portrait rather than a scene. The colour is cool, but the situation is warm: this is a painting about a beginning.
Oil on canvas, 100 × 100 cm. This work has been sold; it stays in the archive to show where the paintings available today came from. Similar motifs are in the oil painting gallery.
