A group of forms on very long thin stems — some blue, some graphite, all covered with a heavy net of cells. They stand unevenly, in two planes, leaning slightly in different directions.
I built the ground from horizontal streaks in greys and beiges, scrubbed back to the canvas. Towards the bottom it moves into a darker band with vertical drips.
The title comes from a term describing something I have painted for years: that people need plants, even when they cannot name the need.
The contrast between long fragile stems and heavy heads creates tension — the forms look about to topple, and that is the whole charm of this work.
Oil on canvas, 100 × 120 cm. This work has been sold; it stays in the archive to show where the paintings available today came from. Similar motifs are in the oil painting gallery.
