Watercolour: four rounded grey-brown forms stacked into an unsteady tower, beside them a red-orange head with fine filaments on a wavy stem and a blue-violet pod with pale dots; faint outlines of seed heads behind STABLE INSTABILITY STABLE INSTABILITY

Four forms stand one on another and each touches the one below at a single point. It looks like the moment before it topples — and it stands.

This is no particular plant. The shapes came from seed heads and swollen fruits, but rearranged so that balance alone would matter. On the right a red head hangs on a wavy stem and pulls the whole thing sideways; on the left a blue-violet spotted pod acts as counterweight.

Behind them I left faint, barely visible outlines of real umbels — as a trace of where these forms came from. More about that road in the piece on how a plant becomes abstraction.
