In full sun a poppy stops being red and turns coral — the light passes right through the petal and takes its weight away.
Three flowers carry full colour, the rest stayed a pale shadow. That is not an unfinished patch but what the eye actually sees in harsh light: a few things close by and a glow out of everything else.
The buds and stems have distinct hairs, painted one by one on dry paper. The dark thicket below is the only place with strong, saturated colour, and it holds the whole sheet to the ground.
