Ornamental allium flowers as a globe made of several hundred tiny florets, which makes it look built rather than grown.
Each globe went on separately, in small touches of the brush, to keep the rough edge — a smooth patch would have looked like a balloon. Beside them the buds stayed closed, teardrop-shaped and yellow-green, because the violet only arrives in them at the very end.
The large leaf below is the only place with strong, undiluted colour. It holds the whole painting to the ground.
