They stand in the grass and look — or rather one of them looks, the one with two black eyes. The rest have no faces and do not need them.
All of them are translucent, so you can see through them to one another and to the landscape behind. This is the one thing watercolour does not have to fake: a layer laid over a layer really does let through what is underneath.
The shapes came from plants — from swollen fruits, rootlets, seed heads — but set upright and side by side they began to behave like company rather than a herbarium. The green strip of grass below is the only place with strong colour; without it the whole thing would float away.
