A cobalt snail glides forward with its tentacles outstretched, as if it really meant to escape someone — its shell coiling into a hypnotic spiral, the strongest point of the whole composition. I lay the ultramarine in layered glazes, from a saturated depth in the shadow to a lightened blue at the top of the shell, while white specks of untouched paper mimic the damp sheen of skin. Behind the protagonist a turquoise thicket blurs together with a few slender trunks, and below, a rusty streak of water reflects the daylight.
