The spiky fruit of a lobed bur cucumber hangs at the center of the frame, tangled in a web of thin, dried tendrils that fan out in every direction like an ink drawing. Pinpoint light picks out the rough, softly spined skin and single droplets of moisture on the vines, leaving the rest in navy half-darkness. Selective sharpness builds a clear hierarchy: the sharp, rough fruit against a silky blur of background. The cool, nocturnal palette and the slightly unsettling form give the frame a tension rare in botanical photography. The work looks striking on its own, in a black frame with wide white passe-partout.
I photograph on the wild meadows of Warsaw. These are plants considered weeds. Often unnoticed, yet look how beautiful they are.
