On a dark, cracked twig grows a colony of wall lichen — yellow-olive rosettes of thallus form a frilled, coral-like growth, while next to it a silver-grey lichen creates a rough, mineral crust.
I photograph on the wild meadows of Warsaw. I frame the branch horizontally, across the full width of the shot, and keep only the edges of the thallus in focus, so the background blurs into a uniform pearl grey. These are plants considered weeds. Often overlooked, yet look how beautiful they are. The contrast of warm yellow against cool grey gives an almost jewel-like effect: a weed of walls and fences gains the rank of a specimen from a natural history cabinet.
The mood is investigative and calm, without ornament. The piece works beautifully paired with another botanical shot above a sofa, a chest of drawers, or a dining bench.
