The frame closes in on a poplar twig so tightly that the rhythmically arranged scales and dusty catkins turn into an abstract, fish-scale pattern running the full width of the shot. I build the image in a cool range of steel, graphite, and muted blue, with single warm, rust-colored flares along the edges of the scales.
