At the center of the frame sits the coiled crozier of a young fern — a perfect spiral that has not yet had time to unfurl. The dark, navy background is completely blurred, while a pinpoint of light draws out the scaly, hair-covered surface of the fiddlehead and its geometric pattern. A shallow depth of field isolates the plant the way a display case would, giving the photograph a cabinet-like, almost scientific gravity.
