In winter only the skeleton of a meadow is left, and that is its best moment. Dry seed umbels stand on thin curving stems — some close, distinct and dark, others metres away, barely indicated.
The ground is soft and damp, moving from cool white at the top to a hazy blue near the earth. There is not a single hard edge here apart from the plants themselves.
This work is essentially a drawing made with paint. The whole effect rests on how thin the line is and how far it fades into the distance.
The cool, almost monochrome palette means the painting calms a room rather than enlivening it.
Oil on canvas, 100 × 100 cm. This work has been sold; it stays in the archive to show where the paintings available today came from. Similar motifs are in the oil painting gallery.
