Horsetail is older than trees and looks as though it knows it. It has no flower and no leaf in the ordinary sense — it has a spore cone covered in a net of hexagonal shields, and whorls of thin branches spreading from a single point.
I painted three cones, because only with three does it show that the mosaic settles differently every time. Amber and orange went on in turn, on dry paper, so the spots would not merge into one surface.
The ground stayed misty and undefined — horsetail usually grows in damp, overgrown places where you cannot see much further than arm's length anyway.
