You only have to give a plant eyes for it to stop being a plant. Here there are four, set on thin stalks like a snail's, and the whole form immediately begins to look at you.
The shapes are real — swollen fruits, spiky calyxes, a twig with blue berries on the left. The only new thing is that they stand upright, one above another, and have something to look with.
Everything is translucent, so the pale leaves of the ground show through the forms. Watercolour does that by itself: a layer laid over a layer really does let through what is underneath — there is nothing to fake.
