A blue poppy looks improbable, and that is precisely why I wanted to paint it translucent — so that what lies behind shows through the petal.
The petals are laid thinly, almost in a single stroke, and the dark violet in the centre was added at the end, once the rest had dried. The stems carry visible hairs, the buds are still closed and bowed.
The bottom of the painting deliberately went into dark, nearly black green. A flower that is meant to glow needs something heavy underneath — otherwise the whole sheet becomes equally light and flat.
