A July meadow in the afternoon is so bright that the eye stops telling details apart — a few near shapes remain, and white mist out of everything else.
That is why only two umbels were given full colour. The rest are a pale trace, in places a bare outline, in places a mark that spread in the wet paper and stayed exactly as it came out.
The cobalt on the two front shapes does all the work: without it the painting would be uniformly light and nothing would stand in front.
