A woman with a bowed head and short, silvery hair holds a small cobalt bird on her hand - and the whole scene closes into this one, attentive gaze. The background is built from blurred blues, which on the damp paper spread around her silhouette like a glow, while the dress and face remain almost untouched, rendered by the white of the ground alone. I carry the paint here very sparingly, in glazes, letting the transparent layers build a soft modeling of the cheek and shoulder.
The only strong accent is the intense blue of the bird's feathers, which draws the eye. A delicate, lyrical piece for a bedroom, a bright living room, or a reading corner.
