A sunflower up close is not a flower but a disc: a head with hundreds of seeds arranged in spirals, rimmed with yellow.
So I painted the discs alone, without petals in the ordinary sense. The centres are speckled, each one differently, because in nature they never settle the same way twice. The stems stayed thin and dark — their only job is to hold those weights in the air.
The bottom is horizontal bands of ochre, grey and orange, laid wet into wet. It is not a particular field, only as much ground as the flowers need in order not to hang in a void.
