Two birds with cobalt wings and crested black heads sit on the same branch, one higher, the other near the bottom of the frame — as if they had just been having a brief, understanding conversation.
Around them large leaves spread wide in a bright, spring green, with clearly drawn veins and a backlit, translucent blade. The background dissolves into a minty, turquoise mist, in which I leave barely visible shadows of further twigs — a device that builds depth without disturbing the lightness of the watercolor.
The paint works freely here on wet paper, and rusty flecks on the birds' chests add warmth to the scene. A fresh, joyful piece that will bring a breath of air to a bedroom, dining room, or child's room.
