Few birds sing in winter, and you hear each one separately. This one has its beak open and its head tilted — the only movement in the whole painting.
The rust-coloured breast is the strongest colour on the sheet and stands in direct opposition to the blues of the ground. The ground was laid wet on wet, so turquoise and blue spread on their own and left those ragged edges that cannot be painted deliberately.
The twigs below are snow-covered and deliberately pale. Had they carried as much colour as the bird, the painting would have lost its centre.
