The head of a thistle fills almost the entire frame — a navy, almost inky sphere from which dozens of spiky needles shoot out, along with small, bright flashes left by the white of the paper. Below it spreads a delicate, celadon calyx and thin dark-green stems, while a pale green leaf shows through in the background, painted with a broad, spread glaze.
The clash of deep navy with semi-transparent, cool green creates an effect of remarkable depth while keeping the full lightness of watercolor. This is an elegant, atmospheric piece that looks wonderful in a living room, bedroom, or study with a subdued color scheme.
