Two trunks grow so close together that in one spot they finally touch — and right there, on the darker bark, a deep, carmine stain blooms, as if the tree had a heart.
I carry the color from heated rust and ochre to saturated browns with a green undertone, letting the paint settle at the edges and form natural, ragged rings of absorption. The background stays almost empty, a cool white of the paper, with barely marked grey shadows and thin twigs drawn in ink.
The minimalism of the composition lets the contrast of warm browns and reds work at full strength. An elegant, emotion-filled piece — a beautiful anniversary gift, and indoors a strong accent above a chest of drawers or in a bedroom.
