A cosmogony is an account of how the world came into being. These flowers look as though they were coming into being right now — round, not yet settled, with stamens spreading like the first lines of something still arranging itself.
The heads are pale blue and half translucent, set in green leaves laid out like a fan. The stamens curve into arcs and end in dark dots — the only part of the painting done on dry paper, with a fine brush.
The rest was made wet on wet: turquoise and green spread through damp paper and left marks that cannot be planned. The pale stalks behind are pencil, deliberately left uncovered.
