The thistle's head, round and densely spined, grows out of a prickly stem and hangs in a cool, navy-steel dusk. I frame the plant very closely, so the focus covers only the ring of thorny scales, while I blur the rest of the background into a soft, inky glow.
I photograph on the wild meadows of Warsaw. Side, diffused light draws silver outlines on the spines and brings out the metallic, almost mineral character of the surface. These are plants considered weeds. Often overlooked, yet look how beautiful they are. The mood is austere and elegant at once — the field weed becomes here a portrait with the discipline of a studio shot.
The print looks great on its own above a sofa, and equally good as part of a cool, blue-graphite triptych wall.
