The flowering spike of ribwort plantain rises in the frame like a small, dark tower, ringed at its base by a wreath of creamy stamens. I photograph the plant from very close, in side light that highlights the frosted down on the filaments and the grainy texture of the packed flowers. The background stays deeply navy and completely blurred, so the bright pollen rings stand out with an almost baroque plasticity. The mood is stately and focused — a roadside weed portrayed with the gravity due to a rare specimen. The large format and dark palette make the work stand well as a solo accent above a sofa or in a dining room.
