This painting, decided in its colors, came about after an autumn walk when everything around was turning golden and the birches with their black and white bark reigned in that setting. So I set white, slender trunks in a dense row across the whole canvas, and their bark is marked by characteristic black dashes and eyes.
In the background I kindle a lively, golden yellow of small leaves, shimmering like a forest crown lit by the sun. Dark, graphite passages between the trees add depth to the composition and make the bright trunks come clearly to the foreground.
The combination of black, white and intense yellow gives the work an energetic, autumnal character. This is a large, decorative painting that will light up a modern living room or a spacious dining room.
